Dedication Event – Renee Rhodes | July 12 | Noon
At noon on Thursday, July 12, the City of New London celebrates the newest addition to Downtown’s public art collection. The monument, created by sculptor Renee Rhodes, celebrates the maritime history of New London and features a 25-foot gaff-rigged yardarm flagpole and a life-size bronze of Athena, protector of cities. The dedication with city officials will take place at the corner of Pearl Street and Eugene O’Neill Drive in New London. A reception will follow at RD86, across the street, at 86 Golden Street.
Renee Rhodes is a Connecticut sculptor working in bronze. She has designed and sculpted an installation to celebrate the Maritime History of New London. Combining classical and nautical themes, Rhodes has created a monument to celebrate New London as a cultural center and seafaring port. This project is in collaboration with Hygienic Art and Kent & Frost.
“This project was a wonderful opportunity to join fine art with New London’s rich nautical history,” Rhodes stated. “I created a life-size bronze sculpture of the goddess Athena, protector of cities, standing before a nautical mast and facing out to sea. The monument is to inspire the citizens and welcome visitors,” she added.
