Dr. Seuss Birthday Party | March 3 | 9 am – 5 pm
Our Dr. Seuss Birthday Party is an annual favorite full of wacky, crazy, and sometimes delicious fun. This is our biggest celebration ALL YEAR: we are opening the Springfield Science Museum and the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum an hour early at 9 am and there will be dozens of activities throughout the museum galleries.
Please note that while the birthday activities will be open to all visitors, timed tickets for the Dr. Seuss Museum will sell-out fast–order advance tickets today!
All activities are FREE with museum admission.
Today’s Highlights
Green Eggs & Ham Challenge, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Join Springfield Museums in an attempt to serve the most helpings of Green Eggs & Ham ever! Get your sample in the Wood Museum of Springfield History.
Meet Tish Rabe, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Tish Rabe has written over 160 children’s books for Sesame Street, Disney, Blue’s Clues, Curious George, Huff and Puff and many others. In 1996- five years after the death of Dr. Seuss- she was selected by Dr. Seuss Enterprises to create The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library, a new line of rhyming science books for early readers. Each child 12 and under will receive a free copy of The Thinga ma Jigger is Coming Today or Thump/The Lost Egg. While supplies last, additional books are available for purchase in the Museum Store.
Mr. Vinny’s Little Puppet Show, noon & 2 pm
Very interactive! Full of stories! Silly and surprising! Kids use their heads to help him tell the story of ‘The 12 Lil’ Pigs and the Big Bad Pineapple’. He’s amazed at how good they are at a game called “What’s that Shadow.” Imagination! Participation!
Head to Toe Wacky Fashion Show, 3 pm
Strut your stuff on the Cat Walk! Wear your own wacky outfit from home or put on your wearable creations from your day at the museums and let the paparazzi snap your photos like crazy! MC’d by Tish Rabe.
Ongoing Activities
Dr. Seuss Cakes & Decorations, 10 am – 3 pm
See the real cakes and alternative creations throughout the galleries in every building, including a Seussian ice sculpture on the Quadrangle.
Color a Stovepipe Hat, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Use fabric markers to design and then wear your very own felt hat fit for a cat! While Supplies Last.
Design Wild Socks, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
You have brains in your head and feet in your shoes, create a pair of socks worthy of a Fox! While Supplies Last.
Strolling Magic with Malik the Magician, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Malik is a full time comedy magician with over 25 years of experience performing for family, corporate and college audiences. Come and enjoy his strolling magic in the Springfield Science Museum.
Digital Dr. Seuss, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Read and explore short stories from our favorite author digitally on the museum’s tablets. While batteries last.
Dr. Seuss Photo Booth, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Grab a Seussian prop to take some fun and memorable family photos.
Seuss Trivia, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Spin the big wheel, answer a trivia question, and win a prize! Questions are suitable for all ages, prizes while supplies last.
Seuss Puppet Theaters, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm
Create your own performance with our Seuss shadow puppet and finger puppet theaters.
Meet the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm
Get a high five and take your photo with this wacky crew.
Meet the Grinch, 10:30 am – 3:30 pm
This lovable curmuggeon has come down from Mount Crumpet for one day only, to celebrate his creator’s birthday!
Art Discovery Center, noon – 4 pm
Trace Chinese characters, try on costumes, play gallery games, peek under lift-up panels on the Wall of Symbols to discover the meaning behind Asian motifs, put on a puppet show, and make an art project. Today’s Project: Make a Wearable Polka Dot Bow Tie–Dr. Seuss’ favorite accessory.
