A few words about A Hill-Stead Salon from Steve Straight:
In the onslaught of our daily news, the world can feel unpredictable, unsettling. We feel strongly that what will help us through these times is a rededication to the sense of community. We think of the Danish concept of hygge – the idea of making ordinary things more beautiful, more special, and certainly, a kind of coziness in the dead of winter as we draw together.
Toward that end, we have designed a Salon – a fashionable assemblage of notables held by custom at the home of a prominent person. Salons began in Italy in the 16th century and quickly spread to France; in both countries, they flourished throughout the next three centuries.
The Salon will feature spoken word and music. But beyond that, in the spirit of the traditional salon, we feel the most important aspect of the gathering will be the conversation, which is the heart of any community.
Marian Maccarone has sung professionally for more than thirty years. She has performed in numerous music series, including the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival, and has frequently appeared as soloist with members of the Hartford Symphony. In addition to performing, Ms. Maccarone teaches voice privately and serves as cantor at several churches in the Archdiocese of Hartford.
Steve Straight is professor of English and director of the poetry program at Manchester Community College. His books include The Almanac (Curbstone/Northwestern University Press, 2012) and The Water Carrier (Curbstone, 2002). For many years Straight directed the Connecticut Poetry Circuit, and for many summers he directed the Seminar Series for the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. In 1998 he was named a Distinguished Advocate for the Arts by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts.
