Artist Statement
In this series “Roots and Spirits”, each painting depicts a different “Loa”, or “little God” of the Haitian people and their voodoo culture. I am compelled to make others aware about the voodoo culture beyond the general association to voodoo dolls and zombies. Voodoo is more than a religious practice, it is about creating community, unity, healing, and finding peace and belonging. Voodoo’s rich and graceful traditions and symbolism have been lost in Voodoo’s Hollywood translation.

Each Loa are omnipotent and function differently to support their believers. “Roots and Spirits” introduce viewers to the joy of voodoo, including Creole words, color combinations, and symbols that are also found across the globe infused into most major world religions. Practitioners of voodoo are deeply committed believers in higher powers to enhance their time in life, protect themselves, loved ones, and return love to the earth and history the Haitian people belong to.

Each piece includes texture, found objects, and mixed media combinations.

About the Artist

Pierre Sylvain is a self-taught artist and has exhibited throughout New England and the United States. His works are represented by galleries in Washington DC and New Orleans, are included in private and public collections, and are infused into different Connecticut communities. As a grant recipient, Sylvain lined Main Street Middletown with his Haitian style recycle bins that recycled oil drums in his “Trash Grow Art” series. Sylvain is the founder and curator of “Art for Haiti”, an annual collective show of community artists partnering with CT/Haitian Non-Profits. In addition to showing his work, Sylvain enjoys spreading art appreciation as a teacher to individuals and the community. Children belonging to inner city or art collective groups have worked with Sylvain to produce artistic community statements in their images. Sylvain co-produced and illustrated “A Mother’s Love of Music”, a poetry book collaboration that reflects his common themes of music, movement, and strength.
